How rakeback works
Rakeback is a share of the house edge paid back to you on every bet, win or lose. For regular players it is usually worth more than any welcome bonus.
The formula
Rakeback = amount wagered × house edge × rakeback rate. If you wager $10,000 on games with a 3% edge at a 10% rakeback rate, you get $30 back. Your expected loss drops from $300 to $270.
Why the rate alone is misleading
A 70% rakeback on a 0.5% edge pays less per bet than 20% rakeback on a 3% edge. Some casinos also calculate rakeback on a fixed "theoretical" edge rather than the real edge of the game you played, or exclude certain games. Always check what the percentage is applied to.
Schedules: instant, daily, weekly, monthly
Casinos pay rakeback on different schedules, and some split it across several. Instant rakeback lands after every bet; weekly and monthly portions often depend on your activity in that period. Many casinos tie the rate to VIP levels, so new accounts start lower.
Rakeback versus deposit bonuses
A deposit bonus is a one-off amount with wagering attached. Rakeback has no wagering and keeps paying as long as you play. For a player who wagers several times their deposit every month, rakeback almost always comes out ahead. For a one-time player, a fair deposit bonus can be worth more.
Rakeback and responsible play
Rakeback rewards volume. Never wager more just to earn more of it: the house edge you pay always exceeds the rakeback you receive.
A worked example across three casinos
Take $20,000 wagered in a month on slots with a 3% edge, so $600 expected loss. At 5% rakeback you get $30 back, at 15% you get $90, at 30% you get $180. Your expected net cost falls from $600 to $570, $510 or $420. The higher rates are usually tied to VIP levels, so check where a new account starts.
On a 1% dice game the same $20,000 costs $200 in expectation; 15% rakeback returns $30. Lower-edge games return less rakeback because there is less edge to share, but they cost you far less to begin with.
